What We Did
The promotion for the upcoming VMA Awards features 4 nominated artists- Taylor Swift, Ne-Yo, Cobra Starship, and Katy Perry- as well as the host, Russell Brand, each singing their rendition of the famous tune “Tonight,” from the play West Side Story. As the spots roll out to promote the show and upon launch of the show, viewers will get to see the individual performances, as well as anthems with all of the artists together.
To pull this off, the Click 3x team worked directly with MTV On-Air Promos on a multi-day, multi-location shoot, throughout NYC, Brooklyn and Nashville. In the pre-pro phases we collaborated with director Seyi Peter-Thomas as visual effects supervisors, coming up with the most efficient solutions before heading into the shoot, so that all of the post effects, animation, and 3D would seamlessly come together. Led by Click 3x creative director and visual effects artist Mark Szumski, Click 3x had a presence in all phases of the production from the scout through post, to bring the vignettes together.
After the spots were edited, they were delivered to Click, where a group of 2D designers and animators, CGI artists, and visual effects artists on flame crafted the environments in each scene. Some shots needed intricate CGI composited in, while others needed new background to mimic and deliver what was captured in the live-action shoot. The end result is a music video setting the energy an tempo for the upcoming Video Music Awards.
