Launching today, at 12:55 PM on It’s on with Alexa Chung, is the full anthem spot for the upcoming 2009 VMAs on MTV September 13th. Titled “VMA Side Story,” it features Russell Brand, Cobra Starship, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Ne-Yo, all in different scenes, singing their rendition of “Tonight” from the famous West Side Story.
Both an homage and update for today’s MTV viewer, Click 3x worked alongside MTV director Seyi Peter-Thomas and producer Kris Walter from the beginning of the campaign to help craft technical and creative solutions in the pre-production process that would enable an efficient production process and post production delivery. Led by creative director Mark Szumski, the Click team was on scouts and set for live-action production in Times Square, Nashville, Brooklyn, and Manhattan as visual effects supervisors. After the spots were edited, they were delivered to Click, where a group of 2D designers and animators, CGI artists, and visual effects artists on flame crafted the environments in each scene. Some shots needed intricate CGI composited in, while others needed new background to mimic and deliver what was captured in the live-action shoot. The end result is a music video setting the energy an tempo for the upcoming Video Music Awards.
