Another Backstory Event at The ADC

Again, back, with a three creatives- a team of creatives from Weiden + Kennedy back in Portland from a stint in Tokyo and an art director from Saatchi & Saatchi. If you aren’t familiar with the Backstory series it is an opportunity at the ADC to hear from past young guns- who they are, what they do and how they have arrived here.

What sets it apart is that as an organization, the ADC has been around since 1920- when Art Directors made 5 dollars an hour. Now, they make a bit more, but that isn’t the only change it has seen. Technologies, methodologies, media, reach, influence, communication and a million other things have changed over the past 90 years. Typically for most organizations, they aren’t able to morph and change with the times and fade away with their most prolific senior members. The Art Director’s club, however shares and awards the impact of the breadth of its members. It is events like the Young Guns distinction that shines the spotlight on the future of creativity and awards some of the most innovative talent who work hard to refine their craft.

The first Young Gun tonight is Menno Kluin, who is an Art Director at Saatchi & Saatchi. While garnering the top awards in the industry, he has created impeccable work for Glide, Stuffit, and Tide, and Olay and many others. Menno has taken a bit of a different path to get here. After deciding that choosing one specialty wasn’t an option he struck out with a goal of excelling in all parts of the creative process from graphic design, through copywriting and marketing. He won his first Lions as a student and has received distinction as The Most Awarded Art Director worldwide.

Our second gun is actually a two-barrel shotgun. The duo of Driscoll Reid and Chris Hutchinson are a creative team at Weiden + Kennedy in Portland. Both had worked out of school at small agencies. Pushed to the brink of resigning from advertising all together, they met as part of the first WK12 class where they began collaborating before teaming up upon leaving the program. As a creative team they worked first in Portland on EA and then out in Tokyo on Nike. Aside from their work they also find time for personal projects, submitting work for Weiden + Kennedy’s recent MAKE Global Charity Art Show.
